The geisha word consists of two kanji: 芸 (gei) meaning “art” and 者 (sha) meaning “person” or “doer”. So geisha are “artist”, “performing artist”, or “artisan”. Another name for geisha is geiko (芸子), which is usually used to refer to geisha from western Japan, which includes Kyōto and Kanazawa.

To be a geisha is to be in a very beautiful world, surrounded by beautiful women, and beautiful things, and entertaining in beautiful places. It is difficult to have a truly beautiful life, but this comes close to it.
